Stay Tuned Hey hey! Welcome to the liveblog! At this very moment Im sitting in a hotel in Portland Oregon absolutely surrounded by prefrosh. Why am I absolutely surrounded by prefrosh? Because Im sitting at the Brown Yale MIT information session, waiting to here all about two schools Ive never been to and one school with which Im intimately familiar. Ill be live blogging Mikeys (the MIT speaker, and recent graduate) information but, as this is not a Brown or Yale admissions blog, I probably wont be blogging about their info. Instead, I will make random observations about the random people I see around me. _____ It all brings back some pretty awesome memories. I dont know about you guys, but I attend a freaking ton of these info sessions. Not just MIT, but Cornell, Columbia, Stanford, etc etc. It always involved hour drives to Portland, free pitchers of water, free pens and pamphlets, and lots and lots of info. Its been several years since Ive attended, I guess because Im no longer exploring schools, but its been a long time since Ive gone through the admissions process so I figured I should brush up on my statistics and refresh my memory about how admissions actually works. You know, I need to know what theyre telling you guys! _____ The representative for Brown is starting off the evening. The format for the evening will be each of the representatives to discuss a broad, general aspect of admissions that is relevant to each school. Then, after the general information, each speaker will discuss the individual schools. At the end there will be some QA , which I probably wont be blogging (because Ill be talking). _____ Topic one: The college search! The college search is all about research. There are a bunch of ways to do it, visiting, info sessions, websites, etc. She mentions that the average number of schools people are applying to is pushing 15, which they believe is TOO MUCH! What do they suggest? Aim for 7-9, and round them well. Some reaches, some target schools, and some safety schools, but make sure you like ALL OF THEM. You dont want to get into a school you dont want to attend. Itll make your April much easier when you have to decide. _____ Topic two: Admissions! Nick, from Yale, is the speaker. He was a history major and is from Ohio (shout out). Here are some things to think about. EA, ED, or Regular admissions? Should you apply early? Generally, Early Action is non-binding, Early Decision is binding. If you choose to apply early you need to decide if you are ready. The college will not be able to see your senior year, so make sure your Junior year is stellar. Dont feel compelled or obligated to apply early, only apply if you feel ready and have done a lot of research and know what youre doing. Yale, Brown, and MIT are all highly selective schools. They accept about 10% or lower of all applicants. Thats the bad news. The good news is that theres no checklist for being a successful candidate. Many different students fit into different types of classes and will compliment each other. From the applicant pools you could construct two or three different classes, but the admissions office has to choose which class they think will do best. _____ Since its not all about test scores, you should aim to be as true to yourself as possible. The college wants to know about you, not about what you think they want. They know what they want, be yourself. The essay is very important. Dont be analytical, dont write about a current event or history, write about yourself, show them about yourself. Its a challenge, its difficult, but its necessary. _____ Topic three: Financial Aid. Mikey is going to talk about how financial aid works. A lot of people look at the sticker price for the school and are scared away because of it. Admissions is need-blind, meaning they dont look at your finances when you apply. Financial aid is completely need-based, meaning each school will calculate your demonstrated need and will pay for that. The rest is up to you. Your demonstrated need is calculated from the FAFSA, the Collegeboard CSS profile, and various tax forms. Using these, they determine what the family should pay, what the student should pay (internships, outside work, scholarships, etc), and then the rest is paid by the school as a grant (not a loan, were talking free money). A lot of times the actual payment is much lower than the sticker price. You will apply for financial aid before you are accepted, this is normal. _____ Question: How has the economy affected endowments and financial aid? Endowments have been hit, but the money isnt coming from financial aid, so no worries. Question: What is the difference between early action and early decision? Early action is completely non-binding. If you apply early and are accepted then you still get to wait to decide. Early action single-choice (Yale) means you can only apply early to one school, but at MIT you can apply early to multiple schools (just, you know, not Yale). Brown is Early Decision, meaning you can only apply to them early, and if you are accepted you MUST attend. ED = binding, EA = non-binding. Question: International students? Brown is not need blind for international students, MIT is still need blind, so finances wont come into play. No more than 8% of MITs student body can be international. International can only apply regular action, not early. Yale is need blind without a strict cap, but they aim for around 10% of their student body to be international students. _____ Question: Transfer admissions? At MIT its dependent on how many freshmen dont go onto sophomore year (around 2%). Its very selective and very difficult, make sure you have a super stellar freshman year at your other college. _____ Question: High school foreign language requirement? MIT = 1 year! Whoo-hoo! Brown = around 4 years for competitive. Question: IB diplomas? Colleges are familiar with IB and understand that its very difficult. They take it into account. _____ Its time for Brown to talk now, and time for me to look around! Its filled to capacity here, there are people sitting on the floor and standing all along the back of the room. Im debating standing up and giving somebody my seat, but Im in the middle of the last row and itd be all awkward to stand up and have one person sit down. This is my first info session with multiple schools, its weird thinking that not all of the people here are interested in MIT, that some people dont care at all. _____ I think if a fire marshal walked in wed get in trouble. Oh, and this live blog is costing me $10 since Im not staying in the hotel and MIT isnt whipping out the magic AmEx to pay for it. Maybe Ill bug Matt McGann later for a $10 raise on my next paycheck. Ooh, at Brown they say they dont like it when people fall asleep in class and theyre all super engaged all the time. At MIT, we stay up until 5 in the morning building things and blowing things up, so by the time we get to lecture we are completely zombified, which is good, because I always feel like Im accomplishing more at 4 in the morning than at 9 in the morning. _____ There are little lamps all around the room. _____ The girl next to me has polka dots on her shoes. _____ Oh look, Brown builds a race car every year just like MIT! Ill bet they compete against each other. Shameless plug, if you attend MIT you should join the race car team, especially if youre MechE. They want you, trust me, they are always looking for help. _____ At Brown you can study abroad anywhere that youre allowed to travel as an American. You can also go to Cuba! thats a lol from me. _____ Browns band is the only band that ice skates at hockey games. Somebody from the MIT Marching Band please tell me this isnt true. _____ I wonder if anybody has ever hacked an info session? I wonder how that would work . . . _____ MIT Time!!! Go Mikey! He graduated in 2005, course 7. MIT is located on 150 acres of riverfront in Cambridge MA. Its a 10 minute walk across the bridge to Boston, and many of the dorms are laid out along the river with beautiful views of the city. _____ MIT is a future-minded school thats centered around problem solving, looking to solve the world problems and better mankind through technology. There are lots of initiatives at MIT, including the MIT Energy Initiative, the Poverty Action Lab, and the MIT Center for Cancer Research. _____ Oh look! A picture of MITs president, Susan Hockfield, standing there next to Obama. I guess that makes MIT kind of important in terms of the work were doing. Another picture is of Tish 10, a student in the MIT Wheelchair class, a class that designs wheelchairs for countries that dont necessarily have pavement. This class gives students the opportunity to design for other countries and then travel and help implement their inventions. MITs undergrads, around 4000 of them, are incredibly diverse. Mikeys rattling off some percentages for races and ethnicity, feel free to look them up. Students come from all over the country, world, and all sorts of financial backgrounds. Youll meet a lot of people from a lot of different cultures. _____ MIT has five schools, but they arent really divided or separated. The first school is the school of engineering, the most popular choice among undergraduates. About half the students are engineering students. Another school is the school of science. About 25% of undergrads are scientists. The third school is the architecture and urban planning school. The fourth school is the school of economics and management, including the Sloan School of Management, which a very very very top tier business school. The fifth school is the humanities school. A lot of people dont realize MIT has humanities, but there are over 500 humanities courses offered each year. _____ Obligatory Eric Lander picture (nobel prize winning biologist, teaches freshman bio). MIT is VERY collaborative. You are rarely all alone, suffering through homework by yourself. HW is often done in groups, people love to help, and you can always count on support from classmates. Its NOT COMPETITIVE! People want to help you, if not just because in the future you may be able to help them. There is no class rank at MIT, all students and degrees are treated the same way, no pressure. P/NR is the magic first semester system at MIT. If you pass your class you just get a P on your report card. If you fail, its stricken from the report card and it shows that you never took it. You cannot fail a class first semester of freshman year. _____ Research at MIT is huge, especially because of the UROP program. UROPs let you tag along on a research team with professors and their grad students, doing real research and getting paid or getting credit. Students get published in papers, can submit research, and it looks great on resumes. MIT has many abroad opportunities. Students can spend their Junior year in Cambridge (the other one) and theres another program that lets students travel to Spain. Any other study abroad opportunities can be worked out. The MISTI program lets students work and study abroad during the summer in a variety of countries. DLAB is a class that lets students travel and work abroad, it develops a technology or device that solves a problem and then travels to a country and helps people use their new technology. _____ Fun! MIT students love to have fun! Not everybody locks themselves away, people love to join clubs, build stuff, play sports, etc. Of note are underwater hockey and the chocolate lab. Sports: 33 varsity sports (we lost 8 this last year :( ). MIT is division III (except for crew, thats Div I). MIT has a PE program thats mandatory, but there are a bunch of fun classes (pistol juggling, archery, etc). MIT has a dome. Theres an entire slide devoted to this dome. Oh, this is a lead-in to the hacking speech. Harmless, anonymous, and sometimes involve the great dome. Its just impossible to have that many people in one room without it getting too hot. My brass rat was about to slide off my finger! _____ I dont think the people around me realize that the chair I left is free booty now. Its just sitting there, empty. Sad times! _____ Ive drunk my free glass of water. It was really cold, and quite tasty. Im very picky about my water, so much so that I cant drink tap water from my dorm, I need to Brita it first. I can taste differences in water. This is good water. Yale is talk talk talking. _____ Hm, Im not sure I have anything else to say, I think this is going to be about it. After this theyre breaking into separate areas to talk to prefrosh about the schools, which Ill be helping with, so I guess this is goodbye! I hope you enjoyed, it was some frantic typing. The Black Codes and Why They Matter Today It’s hard to understand why African Americans are incarcerated at higher rates than other groups without knowing what the black codes were. These restrictive and discriminatory laws criminalized blacks after slavery and set the stage for Jim Crow. They are also directly linked to today’s prison industrial complex. Given this, a better grasp of the Black Codes and their relationship to the 13th Amendment provides a historical context for racial profiling, police brutality, and uneven criminal sentencing. For far too long, blacks have been dogged by the stereotype that they’re inherently prone to criminality. The institution of slavery and the Black Codes that followed reveal how the state essentially penalized African Americans just for existing. Slavery Ended, but Blacks Weren’t Truly Free During Reconstruction, the period that followed the Civil War, African Americans in the South continued to have work arrangements and living conditions nearly indistinguishable from those they had during slavery. Because the cost of cotton was so high at this time, planters decided to develop a labor system that mirrored servitude. According to America’s History to 1877, Vol. 1: â€Å"On paper, emancipation had cost the slave owners about $3 billion - the value of their capital investment in former slaves - a sum that equaled nearly three-fourths of the nation’s economic production in 1860. The real losses of planters, however, depended on whether they lost control of their former slaves. Planters attempted to reestablish that control and to substitute low wages for the food, clothing, and shelter that their slaves had previously received. They also refused to sell or rent land to blacks, hoping to force them to work for low wages.† The enactment of the 13th Amendment only amplified the challenges of African Americans during Reconstruction. Passed in 1865, this amendment ended the slave economy, but it also included a provision that would make it in the South’s best interest to arrest and imprison blacks. That’s because the amendment prohibited slavery and servitude, â€Å"except as a punishment for crime.† This provision gave way to the Black Codes, which replaced the Slave Codes, and were passed throughout the South the same year as the 13th Amendment. The codes heavily infringed on the rights of blacks and, like low wages, functioned to trap them in a slave-like existence. The codes were not the same in every state but overlapped in a number of ways. For one, they all mandated that blacks without jobs could be arrested for vagrancy. The Mississippi Black Codes in particular penalized blacks for being â€Å"wanton in conduct or speech, neglect[ing] job or family, handl[ing] money carelessly, and ...all other idle and disorderly persons.† How exactly does a police officer decide how well a person handles money or if he’s wanton in conduct? Clearly, many of the behaviors punishable under the Black Codes were completely subjective. But their subjective nature made it easier to arrest and round up African Americans. In fact, a variety of states concluded that there were certain crimes for which only blacks could be â€Å"duly convicted,† according to The Angela Y. Davis Reader. Therefore, the argument that the criminal justice system works differently for whites and blacks can be traced back to the 1860s. And before the Black Codes criminalized African Americans, the legal system deemed runaway slaves fugitives for stealing property - themselves!   Fines, Forced Labor, and the Black Codes Violating one of the Black Codes required offenders to pay fines. Since many African Americans were paid low wages during Reconstruction or denied employment at all, coming up with the money for these fees all too often proved impossible. Inability to pay meant that the county court could hire out African Americans to employers until they worked off their balances. Blacks who found themselves in this unfortunate predicament usually did such labor in a slavery-like environment. The state determined when offenders worked, for how long and what kind of work was performed. More often than not, African Americans were required to perform agricultural labor, just as they had during slavery. Because licenses were required for offenders to perform skilled labor, few did. With these restrictions, blacks had little chance to learn a trade and move up the economic ladder once their fines were settled. And they could not simply refuse to work off their debts, as that would lead to a vagrancy charge, resulting in more fees and forced labor. Under the Black Codes, all African Americans, convicts or not, were subject to curfews set by their local governments. Even their day-to-day movements were heavily dictated by the state. Black farm workers were required to carry passes from their employers, and meetings blacks took part in were overseen by local officials. This even applied to worship services. In addition, if a black person wanted to live in town, they had to have a white sponsor. Any African Americans who skirted the Black Codes would be subject to fines and labor. In short, in all areas of life, blacks lived as second class citizens. They were emancipated on paper but certainly not in real life. A civil rights bill passed by Congress in 1866 sought to give African Americans more rights. The bill, for example, permitted them to own or rent property, but it stopped short of giving blacks the right to vote. It did, however, allow them to make contracts and bring their cases before courts. It also enabled federal officials to sue those who violated the civil rights of African Americans. But blacks never reaped the benefits of the bill because President Andrew Johnson vetoed it.   While the president’s decision dashed the hopes of African Americans, their hopes were renewed when the 14th Amendment was enacted. This legislation gave blacks even more rights than the Civil Rights Act of 1966 did. It declared them and anyone born in the United States to be citizens. Although it did not guarantee blacks the right to vote, it  gave them â€Å"equal protection of the laws.† The 15th Amendment, passed in 1870, would give blacks suffrage. The End of the Black Codes By the end of the 1860s, many Southern states repealed the Black Codes and shifted their economic focus away from cotton farming and onto manufacturing. They built schools, hospitals, infrastructure and asylums for orphans and the mentally ill. Although the lives of African Americans were no longer dictated by the Black Codes, they lived separately from whites, with fewer resources for their schools and communities. They also faced intimidation by white supremacist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan when they exercised their right to vote. The economic woes blacks faced led to an increasing number of them to be incarcerated. That’s because more penitentiaries in the South were built along with all of the hospitals, roads, and schools. Strapped for cash and unable to get loans from banks, former slaves worked as sharecroppers or tenant farmers. This involved working other people’s farmland in exchange for a small cut of the value of the crops grown. Sharecroppers frequently fell prey to shopkeepers who offered them credit but charged exorbitant interest rates on farm supplies and other goods. Democrats at the time made matters worse by passing laws that allowed merchants to prosecute sharecroppers who couldn’t pay their debts. â€Å"Indebted African American farmers faced imprisonment and forced labor unless they toiled on the land according to the instructions of the merchant-creditor,† states America’s History. â€Å"Increasingly, merchants and landlords cooperated to maintain this lucrative system, and many landlords became merchants. The former slaves had become trapped in the vicious circle of debt peonage, which tied them to the land and robbed them of their earnings.† Angela Davis laments the fact that black leaders of the time, such as Frederick Douglass, did not campaign to end forced labor and debt peonage. Douglass primarily focused his energies on bringing an end to lynching. He also advocated for black suffrage. Davis asserts that he may not have considered forced labor a priority due to the widespread belief that incarcerated blacks must have deserved their punishments. But African Americans complained that they were frequently jailed for offenses for which whites were not. In fact, whites usually eluded prison for all but the most egregious crimes. This resulted in blacks jailed for petty offenses being incarcerated with dangerous white convicts. Black women and children were not spared from prison labor. Children as young as 6 years old were  forced to work, and incredibly women in such predicaments were not segregated from male inmates, making them vulnerable to sexual abuse and physical violence at the hands of both convicts and guards. After taking a trip to the South in 1888, Douglass witnessed firsthand the effects of forced labor on the African Americans there. It kept blacks â€Å"firmly bound in a strong, remorseless and deadly grasp, a grasp from which only death can free [them],† he noted. But by the time Douglass made this conclusion, peonage and convict leasing had been in effect for more than 20 years in certain places. And in a short stretch of time, the number of black prisoners grew rapidly. From 1874 to 1877, Alabama’s prison population tripled, for example. Ninety percent of new convicts were African American. Crimes formerly considered low-level offenses, such as cattle theft, were reclassified as felonies, ensuring that impoverished blacks found guilty of such crimes would be sentenced to longer prison terms. African American scholar W.E.B. DuBois was disturbed by these developments in the prison system. In his work, Black Reconstruction, he observed, â€Å"The whole criminal system came to be used as a method of keeping Negroes at work and intimidating them. Consequently there began to be a demand for jails and penitentiaries beyond the natural demand due to the rise of crime.† Legacy of the Black Codes Lives On Today a disproportionate amount of black men are behind bars. In 2016, the Washington Post reported that 7.7 percent of black men between the ages of 25 to 54 are institutionalized compared to 1.6 percent of white men. The newspaper also stated that the prison population has quintupled over the past four decades and that one out of nine black children has a parent in prison. Many ex-convicts can’t vote or get jobs after their release, increasing their chances of recidivism and trapping them in a cycle as relentless as debt peonage. A number of social ills have been blamed for the large numbers of blacks in prison - poverty, single-parent homes and gangs. While these issues may be factors, the Black Codes reveal that since slavery ended those in power have used the criminal justice system as a vehicle to strip African Americans of their liberty. This includes the glaring sentencing disparities between crack and cocaine, a higher police presence in black neighborhoods, and a bail system that requires those  arrested to pay for their release from jail or remain incarcerated if they’re unable to. From slavery onward, the criminal justice system has all too often created insurmountable hurdles for African Americans.

To sum up, two types of this emulsion can be formed by mixture. The one which shapes into a water-in-oil system is called W/O emulsion and another is oil-in-water system which is called O/W emulsion. Emulsion is widely used in manufacturing as a common form of formulated products, and whose properties have been studied in agriculture, medicine, cosmetics and food. Some kinds of emulsion are necessities in daily life, such as: milk, ice cream, vinaigrettes, rubber, latex, crude oil emulsions and even some cutting fluids formetal working. However, an emulsion cannot be obtained easily because emulsions cannot be formed spontaneously. Energy is needed to form an emulsion through shaking, stirring, homogenizing or exposure to power ultrasound. And in this proposal, the emulsion is formed by stirring. Some mixing devices will be adopted to blend Silicon oil and water together. So it is apparent that some parameters can be fixed as constant and the others are what we are interested in to investigate. A number of the physicochemical properties of emulsions can only be understood with reference to their dynamic nature. Many properties depend on the volume fraction of both phases and the type of emulsifier present. Because of the low solubility of oil in water it is usually assumed that the oil in an emulsion droplet is isolated from that in neighboring droplets. Emulsion stability refers to as the ability of resisting change in its properties over time. Coalescence happens when droplets crash into each other and combine to form a larger droplet, so the mean droplet size increases over time. Emulsions can also undergocreaming, in which the droplets rise to the top of the emulsion. In order to keep the emulsion stability, an appropriate surface active agent should be decided to add into the system to increase the kinetic stability of an emulsion so that the size of the droplets keep unchangeable significantly with time. The emulsions produced by dispersion of a liquid into another insoluble liquid is an aspect of great benefits in cosmetic, pharmaceutical, chemical, and food industries. Present industrial methods applied in emulsification processes have been fully developed and studied. For example, rotor stator devices, and static mixers techniques are well-accepted as important ways of producing small droplets but with another side effects on the liquids, bringing potential hazards to the properties of compounds. It has been proved by plenty of researchers that droplet size is one factor of the most difficult ones to control because some instability phases will be produced among this during the controlling process. Rotor-stator mixers are usually used for processing of disperse/break solid particles and aggregates and also to colloidal liquid-liquid systems. Such as cosmetic, food, pharmaceutical, health care products and many other industries. As the drop size affects the processing and the properties of the products in the emulsification. The mechanisms that break the drops is the key for design process. Rotor and stator are the two main mechanisms which can break drops in rotor-stator devices. For emulsification, the industrial processing and some of the product properties are influenced by the drop size. In a two-phase process, the mass transfer rate is proportional to the interfacial area between the two phases. The drop size distribution is varied with the conditions inside the vessel and the length of mixing time and thus the interfacial area is changed with it. Hence successful processing steps are designed by establishing deep understanding of the mechanism of drop breakup. In general, two competing theories have been proved on drop breakup mechanisms to give a good explanation to this phenomenon. So one theory shows that droplet breakup is produced by turbulent eddies (energy dissipation rate) and another is due to the agitator shear rate. Another widely used mixing device: static mixers, which are also called motionless mixers, have become standard equipment in the process industries. Their application in continuous processes is a good choice to traditional agitation because generally better performance can be obtained with this device at lower cost. There are also some other kinds of mixing devices such as CSTR and batch reactor. But according to the cost, property of the emulsion, the conditions in the lab and many other factors I chose rotor-stator mixer as the agitator. The working principle of rotor-stator mixture is shown as below in Figure 1. The property of the emulsion is influenced by the droplet size. The viscosity and storage modulus of W/O and O/W fine concentrated emulsions were increased by the reduction of droplet size. And the shear-thinning effects got stronger in the fine emulsions As silicon oil is the resource which is manly used in cosmetics. How bath gel be different by the different size of droplet is the main purpose. As the rheology of emulsion is influenced by the droplet size, various of bath gel might be produced with different property. Background 3.1Theory 3.2. Literature review There have been a large amount of methods of producing polymer emulsions in industrial manufacturing. One of the mainly way of them is emulsion polymerization. Emulsion polymerization has large polymer relative molecular mass, fast reaction rate, low pollution and the equipment and technology with which to produce the emulsion products is easy to get and operated in generation. Recently, more and more scientists have focused on this area. Many factors have an important influence on both yield and quality of the polymerization product in the process of emulsion polymerization, such as the type and concentration of emulsifier, the sorts and concentration of initiator, the intensity of stirring, reaction temperature, the category and concentration of electrolyte and some other technological parameters. Emulsion polymerization system is a multiphase system, the effect of stirring turn the monomer into droplet separately, which is good for heat transfer and mass transfer. And keep the system mixing, constant temperature, avoid from local overheating. The yield and quality of the emulsion polymer are controlled by stir directly. Many scholars carried out extensive research on the influence of the mixing of emulsion polymerization. Such as Shunmukhan et al, Omi et al, Nomura et al who had studied the effects of mixing on low solid content of the emulsion. Vanderhoff, M. Zubitor, S. Oprea et al, Matejicek et al who has studied the effects of mixing on high solid content emulsion polymerization (> 50%).This paper elaborated how the mixing effects on the quality of products. Influence of the style of agitator on polymerization The production capacity of reactor, the quality of product and the accident caused by cooling or heating are all related to the type of agitator. Shearing action, circulating mode and the mixed-ability which were generated by mixing are given by the specific style of agitator. And so does the state of macro-flow. 3 factors should be considered when selecting the style of agitator: 1. High heat transfer coefficient should be ensure from the reactor wall or Immersion coil to the reactants; 2. An obvious effect should be provided in the stirring; 3. Low consumption of energy in the stirring. Therefore, in the process of emulsion polymerization, especially for the industrialized production, we should find out the most appropriate style of agitator by strengthen the research about the relation between mixer and emulsion polymerization. Influence of mixing intensity on the emulsion polymerization 2.1 The influence of mixing intensity on latex particle size In the process of emulsion polymerization, mixing intensity has a direct impact on the latex particle size. With the revolution of mixing higher, monomer was divided into smaller beads, the surface area of monomer droplet was larger per cubic centimeter of water, the amount of emulgator adsorbed on the surface was increased, the numbers of micelle were reduced per cubic centimeter of water, the rate of nucleation decreased in phase 1, so does the emulsion grains generated, if the initial monomer amount is fixed, the particle size of latex increases. With the increase of stirring intensity, latex particle size also increases in the process of semi-continuous emulsion polymerization are analyzed and verified by M. Zubitur et al, S. Opera. T herefore, in the emulsion polymerization, the diameter of latex particle is related to the number of latex particle, with the increase of stirring intensity, the number of latex particle decreased, the diameter of latex particle increased, vice versa. 2.2 The influence of mixing intensity on the stability of emulsion Emulsion stability is one of the most valuable properties in researches involving emulsions concerned by numerous scientists. The influence of stirring intensity on the emulsion stability is mainly manifested in polymerization stability. During the process of emulsion polymerization, droplet condensation may happen raised by coalescence of latex particles within the emulsion, as a result of the loss of polymer emulsion stability. In other cases, during the emulsion polymerization, the condensate may deposit on the reactor components which are accumulated in a thick layer. This is one kind of phenomenon of gel. These phenomena may make the color of emulsion fade away, delicate feeling disappear, affecting the quality of the product seriously. Stability of high solid content emulsion has two important areas which should be concentrated on to investigate further. On one hand, with an increase in stirring intensity and collision frequency, the emulsion stability which plays an important role in manufacturing products will be decreased. On the other hand, due to the solid content increased inside the emulsion, and the high emulsion viscosity, the emulsion stability in the heat transfer process impact much on the quality of emulsion products. Especially when the mixing intensity is too high, the material internal shearing action is too frequent; the stability of the emulsion polymerization is easy to destroy so finding some methods to keep its stability should be paid special attention to control the mixing intensity. In  pharmaceutics,  hairstyling,  personal hygiene, and  cosmetics, emulsions are frequently used. These are usually oil and water emulsions but dispersed, and which is continuous depends in many cases on the  pharmaceutical formulation. These emulsions may be called  creams,  ointments,  liniments  (balms),  pastes,  films, or  liquids, depending mostly on their oil-to-water ratios, other additives, and their intended  route of administration.[10][11]The first 5 are  topical  dosage forms, and may be used on the surface of the  skin,  transdermally,  ophthalmically,  rectally, or  vaginally. A highly liquid emulsion may also be used  orally, or may be  injected  in some cases.[10]Popular medications occurring in emulsion form include  calamine lotion,  cod liver oil,Polysporin,cortisolcream,Canesten, andFleet. Microemulsions are used to deliver  vaccinesand kill  microbes.[12]Typical emulsions used in these techniques are nanoemulsions of  soybean oil, with particles that are 400-600nm in diameter.[13]The process is not chemical, as with other types of  antimicrobial  treatments, but mechanical. The smaller the droplet the greater the  surface tension  and thus the greater the force required to merge with other  lipids. The oil is emulsified with detergents using a  high-shear mixer  to stabilize the emulsion so, when they encounter the lipids in the  cell membrane  or envelope of  bacteria  or  viruses, they force the lipids to merge with themselves. On a mass scale, in effect this disintegrates the membrane and kills the pathogen. The soybean oil emulsion does not harm normal human cells, or the cells of most other  higher organisms, with the exceptions of  sperm cells  and  blood cells, which are vulnerable to nanoemulsions due to the peculiarities of their membrane structures. For this reason, these nanoemulsions are not currently used  intravenously  (IV). The most effective application of this type of nanoemulsion is for the  disinfection  of  surfaces. Some types of nanoemulsions have been shown to effectively destroy  HIV-1  and  tuberculosis  pathogens on non-porous  surfaces. Objectives 3.3.1 In this experiment, the first objective is to find the relationship of drop size and stirring intensity. In most cases, an increase in stirring intensity will cause an decrease in the size of every droplet inside of the oil-in-water emulsion. In order to keep the stability of the system, a fixed concentration of surfactant (SLES) will be added in each experiment to keep a balance between the forces in both directions. Furthermore, the quantity of SLES used in every system should be kept the same. Besides, the time for this kind of experiments is not enough to carry out all, so only one type of the agitator will be investigated. Therefore, the parameters which can be changed are the speed of the agitator, the oil viscosity and different time intervals. The second objective is to link droplet size to the viscosity of oil. Different concentration and viscosity of oil may render the emulsion system unstable with respect to time, because different oil viscosity means different Reynolds number showing different flow regime that the emulsion is. And thus the other important properties of the emulsion should be affected by the mean viscosity of the oil phase and water phase. The third objective is to investigate the effect of concentration of aqueous phase have on the droplet size. At the same time, the mixing time can influence the size of the oil droplet and its distribution. So that is another meaningful point to investigate. Methodology Viscosity of the oil is: 10, 1000,12500and 30000 cSt. The agitator rotor can run from 10000 to 20000 RPMs for a rotor stator system. While working with lots of harmful chemicals, I have read the instruction of chemical use which provides some vital information in case of emergency. Gender and Socialization Essay

The main purpose of this paper is to focus on gender socialization. Human beings that belong to different societies have varied perceptions, opinions, and manners toward socializing with the same or opposite sex. Categorized in the main gender types, male and female are known to react in different ways when given and exposed in the same situation. Regardless of cultural norms or mores of any society in particular, interaction with peers, family, classmates, and other people depend on the male’s and female’s orientation in gender socialization and gender roles. Some concepts attempt to explain the gender issues faced by the two gender types. These attributions of concepts then play an important role in understanding the different societies’ construct of their existing mechanisms of gender roles and expectations including the societies’ gender markers as determinants of sex and gender (SparkNotes, 2008). Gender Socialization Gender and socialization are two different terms that have a relationship with each other. Gender refers to the behavioral characteristics of an individual regarding an individual’s essence of womanhood or manhood, masculinity or femininity, while socialization refers to the social and interpersonal instincts of human in interacting, communicating, and dealing with others. A newborn infant for instance, may be oriented towards its gender by its first experience of socialization after being born. The infant may be more exposed to male socialization rather than female socialization or vice versa which would later on affect the behavior of the infant while growing up. Another example is the way parents choose what the appropriate toy is to be played by their sons and daughters. Usually, parents buy their baby girl a mini-kitchen or ironing set to orient them (however, it is subconscious for the parents’ part) with the future maternal role. For the baby boy’s part, they are usually given toy trucks or tools for various chores in the house for the same underlying purpose. Moreover, upon receiving the presents, the girls usually react more appreciative and smiling than the boys. The essence of gender socialization then, is for the infants to learn the behavior appropriate for their designated sexes (SparkNotes, 2008). Reaction By the time an infant reaches ten months after the day of birth, gender socialization is already executed through the infant’s interaction with the environment, its family members, and caretakers. This is the time when the infant starts to identify him- or herself in either of the two sexes: male or female. Thus, this is also the time for newborn infants to associate the specific gender roles (the attributes and behavior that the culture constructively defines) that are appropriate for their sex and gender. Later in the life of infants, the effects of the previous experience in gender orientation would reflect in their current behavior. Meanwhile, I should say from personal experience that I was mostly given a Barbie doll for Christmas or birthday present. In so doing, I grew up to become a very neat lady who has the taste for fashion and luxury Further, I attribute the idea that I have become a fashionable and finesse lady to my previous hobby of playing, dressing and undressing my Barbie doll (SparkNotes, 2008). Conclusion Gender socialization teaches the infants that would grow as adults the appropriate roles defined by culture and behaviors that are expected of them by the society. Submission to the expectations of the culture and society is important, as every living individual has to interact with others in whatever society he or she belongs to in order to survive and attain a sense of belongingness. Family, peer groups, school, mass media, and some texts play a part in honing this cultured set of beliefs regarding the appropriate roles and expected behaviors for men and women. Eliot Ness The Agent who Brought Down Al Capone

Eliot Ness (April 19, 1903 - May 16, 1957) was a U.S. special agent in charge of enforcing prohibition in Chicago, IL. He is best known for leading a squad of special agents, nicknamed â€Å"The Untouchables,† which was responsible for the capture, arrest, and ultimate incarceration of Italian mobster Al Capone. The 18th amendment, which outlawed the consumption of alcohol, spurred a growth in organized crime as bootleggers made fortunes illegally selling alcohol. In Chicago, organized crime and bootlegging were rampant, and one particularly notorious mob boss was the gangster Al Capone. Even with over 3,000 police officers and agents, Chicago’s authorities were rarely able to convict bootleggers. Members of law enforcement protected many of the crime bosses, and deep-rooted bribery and corruption schemes had turned Chicago into become one of the most crime-ridden cities in the United States by the 1920s. The U.S. government at the time dubbed the mafia one of the greatest domestic threats, which is also why, in 1930, the Prohibition Unit was transferred to the authority of the Department of Justice. A greater emphasis was placed on apprehending the major crime bosses and curtailing the power of organized crime syndicates in American cities. The Untouchables Target Capone Two years later, in 1930, Ness was tasked with creating a special team, dubbed â€Å"The Untouchables,† to investigate Al Capone. This task force was limited in its members and rarely had more than 11 men working on the team at once. Ness believed this small circle of investigators would remain free of the corruption that breached most the larger government agencies. The Untouchables conducted multiple public raids and alerted the media to them in order to increase the pressure on Capone. A popular story goes that an associate of Capone once offered Ness $2,000 a week to turn the other way and curtail the raids, but Ness refused. Though Ness and his team compiled evidence of over 5,000 counts of bootlegging by Al Capone, the U.S. District Attorney George E. Q. Johnson argued that a jury would not convict on these charges because prohibition was so unpopular. Instead, the attorney, along with investigators for the IRS convicted Capone of tax evasion and sentenced him to 11 years in a federal prison. Cincinnati and Cleveland Though much of Ness’s notoriety is due to his career in Chicago, he continued on to work in the Cincinnati Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). When prohibition ended in December 1933, the nation did not have the infrastructure and politics to handle a legal liquor market. Large underground distilleries remained in business which also maintained the power of organized crime syndicates in major cities across the U.S. Finally, Ness’s hardline policies had the support of the public as the ATF aimed to quell the violence that resulted from the gang violence over control of the distilleries. As the Special Agent in Charge of the Cincinnati Bureau of the ATF, he raided a litany of these distilleries that were robbing the U.S. government of hundreds of thousands of dollars in alcohol taxes. In 1935 Ness moved his career to Cleveland, Ohio where he became the Cleveland Public Safety Director. He spearheaded campaigns to end corruption in the police force and quell gang violence. He also implemented programs to keep younger children out of gangs by building recreation centers and providing vocational training. This method of law enforcement, communicating with the gangs and providing community support, later became a more widely practiced method of curtailing organized crime. As a result, Ness was initially celebrated in Cleveland for his ability to curb street violence and reform corruption in the government bureaucracies. However, his career stumbled with his handling of the Cleveland Torso Killer, also known as the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run, who murdered and dismembered 12 people in the 1930s. Because most of the attacks were centered in one of the city’s shantytowns, Ness took the men of the town into custody and burned the shanty town to the ground. His actions were seen as unnecessarily cruel and the Torso Killer was never caught, but he did not strike again either. Later Life and Death Ness moved to Cleveland with his then third wife Elisabeth Seaver where he worked in a federal agency which sought to decrease the amount of sexually transmitted diseases in the U.S. military. Soon after, he moved back to Cleveland where he unsuccessfully ran for mayor in 1947. Eventually, he had to resort to taking odd jobs to support himself. Ness died from a heart attack on May 16, 1957, and died in his home in Coudersport, Pennsylvania. Legacy Though Ness received little notoriety during his lifetime, shortly after his death he became an important figure in law enforcement history. A book, The Untouchables, was released only a month after his death and followed his work in incarcerating Al Capone. This led to a series of movies and shows inspired by Eliot Ness, many of which painted him as a 007-type agent who single-handedly ended gang violence in Chicago. Regardless of the Hollywood exaggerations of his story, Eliot Ness’s legacy remains that of a pioneer in law enforcement who successfully combated organized crime in some of the nations most gang-ridden cities.
